Arizona group drops support for sales tax increase

PHOENIX—A prominent business advocacy group has withdrawn its endorsement of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's proposal for a temporary sales tax increase to help balance the state budget.

The Arizona Tax Research Association said Monday it dropped its support partly because Brewer vetoed some spending cuts that she said would devastate vital services.

The association cites Brewer's veto of the repeal of a state property tax and says she exaggerated effects of "unavoidable budget reductions" and that doing so made it even harder for policy-makers to make difficult decisions.

The group says it can't support the proposed sales tax proposal without a guarantee that the revenue would be used to reduce the state deficit and be combined "with real spending reductions."
